Recovery After Hip Replacement
Hip replacement surgery is a successful procedure that significantly improves quality of life. However, success depends on adherence to the recovery program.
Phase One: Early Weeks (1-6 weeks)
What to Expect:
- Mild to moderate pain controlled by medication
- Use of crutches or walker
- Daily physical therapy sessions
- Restrictions on certain movements
Important Tips:
- Avoid bending hip more than 90 degrees
- Don't cross your legs
- Use a pillow between legs while sleeping
- Avoid bending to pick up objects
Phase Two: Intermediate Healing (6-12 weeks)
At this stage, most patients begin to:
- Walk without assistance
- Return to light daily activities
- Drive (after doctor's approval)
- Return to desk work
Phase Three: Full Recovery (3-6 months)
- Complete return to daily activities
- Practice light sports
- Noticeable improvement in flexibility and strength
