Complete guide to recovery phases after hip replacement in Riyadh: first days, weeks, allowed and forbidden exercises, and return to normal life. By Dr. Hazim Sakalla.

Hip replacement surgery has a success rate exceeding 95% with experienced surgeons. The final outcome depends heavily on adherence to the recovery program. Here is a step-by-step guide to what to expect.

Phase 1: Hospital Days (1-3 days)

  • Day 1: Pain control with IV medication, first standing with physiotherapist within 24 hours.
  • Day 2: Short corridor walks with crutches, safe bed-mobility training.
  • Day 3: Practice stairs, ensure basic activity independence, discharge home.

Phase 2: Weeks 1-6 (Early Recovery)

What to Expect:

  • Mild to moderate pain controlled by medication.
  • Use of crutches or walker.
  • Physical therapy 3-5 times weekly.
  • Mild swelling in thigh and leg (normal).

Restrictions (Very Important):

  • Do not cross your legs — ever.
  • No upper-body twisting with feet planted.
  • Use a pillow between legs while sleeping.
  • Avoid bending to tie shoes or pick up objects — use assistive tools.

Phase 3: Weeks 6-12 (Intermediate Healing)

  • Walk without crutches or with light cane.
  • Return to driving (with doctor's approval).
  • Return to desk work full-time.
  • Light home activities.
  • Swimming — excellent in this phase.

Phase 4: 3-6 Months (Full Recovery)

  • Complete return to daily activities.
  • Light sports: long walking, swimming, cycling, gentle yoga.
  • Pain typically gone.
  • Marked improvement in flexibility and strength.
